A group of users from AFAGA Alzheimer visited the Nautilus, the underwater observatory of the Port of Vigo, as part of the ‘Sails for Alzheimer’s’ project, an initiative led by Julio Verne Náutica in collaboration with AFAGA Alzheimer and the association “Veles per l’Alzheimer”.

The aim of this project is to bring the marine environment closer to people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers from an inclusive, therapeutic and emotional perspective. Through a programme of progressive activities, participants gradually become familiar with the sea, working on sensory, emotional and social interaction aspects in safe, adapted and accessible environments.

In this context, the visit to the Nautilus proved to be a particularly meaningful experience, offering a first contact with the sea from a sensory approach. The activity encouraged observation, stimulated curiosity and fostered a connection with the maritime environment in a controlled setting, contributing to a positive and enriching experience for participants.

This activity is also part of the preparation process for the upcoming ‘Regatta for Alzheimer’s’, in which participants will have the opportunity to sail accompanied by professionals. These preliminary experiences are essential to build confidence, reduce uncertainty and facilitate a gradual approach to the marine environment, enhancing emotional well-being and social inclusion for people with Alzheimer’s.

Initiatives such as ‘Sails for Alzheimer’s’ highlight the potential of port and maritime environments as spaces for integration, therapy and improved quality of life, in line with the values of port-city collaboration promoted by RETE.

The “Sails for Alzheimer’s” project is a solidarity initiative that promotes sea-based activities for people with Alzheimer’s, their families and caregivers.

Originally created in Barcelona by four sea enthusiasts who have personally experienced the challenges of this disease, the project seeks to place their maritime knowledge at the service of people living with Alzheimer’s and their families.

Following its successful implementation in Catalonia, the initiative has now arrived in Vigo thanks to the collaboration between its founders, the association “Veles per l’Alzheimer”, and the training school “Julio Verne Náutica”.
