The PortCityFutures research program and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) are organizing this December the international workshop “Creating a Vision for Port Cities: Morocco Edition”, a five-day training event that will bring together professionals and academics from the port, urban, and environmental sectors in Rabat to reflect on the future of port cities.
The initiative, held in collaboration with local and regional partners, follows the successful pilot workshop hosted in The Hague last September and is part of a series of international gatherings aimed at promoting a shared vision of sustainability, resilience, and port-city integration.
Over the course of five days, participants will explore the main challenges and opportunities faced by port territories, analyzing how to balance urban life with the demands of global trade. The program includes hands-on sessions, collaborative design activities, and field visits to the ports and urban areas of Rabat and Salé, Casablanca, Tangier City, and Tangier Med, conceived as living laboratories for experience sharing and idea generation.
Among the workshop contents are strategic planning tools such as stakeholder mapping, scenario building, and value-based planning, along with discussions on ecological transition, heritage identity, and cross-sectoral cooperation.
The workshop is aimed at urban professionals, port authorities, policymakers, and cultural and environmental actors interested in the sustainable development of port environments. Participants will develop long-term strategies for their own port cities, integrating economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
The course will be led by Carola Hein, Professor and Chair of the History of Architecture and Urban Planning at TU Delft, and Director of the PortCityFutures program, internationally recognized for her research on urban history, architecture, and the evolution of port cities around the world.
