The former lighthouse will be relocated from its current site – remote and inaccessible to the public – to a new, fully accessible location in La Marina de València.
Its relocation will enable the recovery of this heritage asset and help enhance, preserve and promote its historical value.
The planned operation includes dismantling, restoring and reinstalling the lighthouse using a technical solution designed to preserve its distinctive features.
At the meeting, the City Council also reported on the recently approved resolution of the Local Government Board concerning the future public use of the Veles e Vents building.
The inter-administrative cooperation and management body for La Marina, made up in equal parts by València City Council and the Port Authority of Valencia (APV), has agreed on a new location for the former Port of Valencia lighthouse, making it fully accessible from the city’s Marina.
The meeting of this body was held today at València City Council and was attended by the Councillor for Major Projects, José Marí Olano; the Third Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Human and Technical Resources, Heritage, Citizen Participation and Outlying Districts, Julia Climent; the City Council Secretary, Manuel Latorre; the President of the APV, Mar Chao; and the Secretary General of Valenciaport, Jorge Herrero.
Among the matters discussed was the new location in La Marina for the former Valencia lighthouse. It will shortly be moved from its current site – remote and inaccessible to the public – to a new, fully accessible location in the access channel at La Marina de València, opposite the Veles e Vents building. The concession holder for the nautical and sports facilities has agreed to the relocation, as the proposed site lies within the concession area.
The Port Authority considers relocating the lighthouse from its current site to a new location accessible to the public to be both an opportunity and a necessity. Following completion of the Port of Valencia’s Northern Extension in 2012, the lighthouse was left in an unsuitable position and could no longer fulfil its function as a maritime beacon. It therefore ceased operating permanently in June 2015, when a new lighthouse was installed to replace it.
Planing it in an area open to public use will enhance an emblematic feature of considerable social value in the history of the Port of Valencia and the Maritime Districts. It will carry this heritage into the future as a symbol fully integrated into València’s waterfront, helping to strengthen the relationship between the port and the public.
Another matter discussed at the meeting concerned the Veles e Vents building. The City Council reported on the Local Government Board’s recently approved resolution regarding the building’s future public use.
