● Carlos Calvelo and Martín Fernández Prado sign a cooperation protocol to develop an innovative model of integration between the Outer Port of Punta Langosteira and the surrounding territory
● Among the first lines of action is the creation of a new pedestrian path between the towns of Rañobre and Suevos
Arteixo City Council and the Port Authority of A Coruña today presented Arteixo Litoral, a strategic initiative aimed at turning the area surrounding the Port of Punta Langosteira into a benchmark for territorial integration, sustainability and shared development. The project was formally established through the signing of a cooperation protocol this morning by the Mayor of Arteixo, Carlos Calvelo, and the President of the Port Authority, Martín Fernández Prado, at the headquarters of the port institution.
Arteixo Litoral has been conceived as a stable framework for institutional cooperation, designed to promote a shared vision for the Arteixo coastline, coordinate actions of common interest and facilitate the mobilisation of public and private resources for its development.
The initiative responds to the transformation experienced by the Arteixo coastline over recent decades as a result of the construction and consolidation of the Port of Punta Langosteira, and proposes a shared vision for the future between the two administrations. Its aim is to harness the opportunities generated by Punta Langosteira to promote initiatives focused on the sustainability and territorial integration of the Outer Port.
Among the first lines of action, the Mayor of Arteixo, Carlos Calvelo, announced “the construction of a new pedestrian path between the towns of Rañobre and Suevos”, and stressed that “Arteixo Litoral represents a historic opportunity to continue transforming our municipality from a sustainable and inclusive perspective. We want the development of the Outer Port to also result in a better quality of life, improved public spaces, new opportunities for our residents and an increasingly close relationship between Arteixo and its coastline.”
For his part, the President of the Port Authority of A Coruña, Martín Fernández Prado, emphasised that “Punta Langosteira is a strategic infrastructure for Galicia and for the Spanish port system as a whole, and is already consolidated as Galicia’s leading port in terms of cargo throughput. With Arteixo Litoral, we are taking a further step towards strengthening the integration between the port and its surrounding area, promoting projects that combine economic growth, environmental sustainability and innovation in the service of the territory.”
The project also provides for the establishment of a governance model under which a commission called Arteixo Litoral will be created. It will be chaired by the Mayor of Arteixo and will include representatives from the City Council and the Port Authority, as well as from other public administrations that may join in the future. This body will be responsible for promoting the studies, reports and proposals required for the development of the initiative.
Previous initiatives
Cooperation between Arteixo City Council and the Port Authority has already resulted in investments of more than two million euros in the towns of Suevos and Rañobre.
In Rañobre, projects have included the construction of a civic centre, a recreational area with a children’s playground, a multi-sports court, an outdoor fitness area and gardens, as well as improvements to the sewerage and water supply networks and works aimed at upgrading local transport connections.
In Suevos, the Port Authority financed rehabilitation works on several streets in the area, with the aim of improving sewerage, water supply, access and road surfacing throughout the parish.
In addition, the Port Authority built a pedestrian and cycle path running parallel to the perimeter fence of the Outer Port.
