September 12, 2022, from 3.00 p.m. to 6.00. p.m. CET, researchers, institutional representatives, experts in the legal and legislative field as well as stakeholders from the maritime cluster will meet in Rome at the Headquarters of the National Research Council of Italy to discuss the challenges and potential of port-cities.
The initiative, organised by RETE – International Association for Collaboration between Ports and Cities, CNR IRISS (Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development) and the Municipality of Livorno, in collaboration with the Port Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea and Propeller Clubs Italia, will be structured in two moments. The event will begin with the presentation of the volume “Waterfront Design in Small Mediterranean Port Towns” (Ed. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2022), by Giovanna Piga, professor of Architecture, Contemporary Design, History and Theory of Architecture at Coventry University and Participant Member of RETE.
The second part of the meeting will be devoted to the seminar “Legal nature of port governance. Ports and cities between public and private”, the 4th and final event of the series “Reading Port-City Complexity. The challenges of port cities after the pandemic in a multi-scalar perspective”. The seminar will focus on complex legal issues, legislative indeterminacies, and inconsistencies between the national and EU levels that are facing Italian ports and, consequently, the entire maritime cluster, issues that have become even more urgent to deal with due to the impacts generated on maritime traffic and supply chain first by the pandemic, then by the war. The initiative stands as an opportunity for multidisciplinary discussion on critical legal-legislative issues and in-depth analysis on the theme of port governance, in a dynamic balance between public and private, stimulating dialogue and synergies between Institutions, scientific community and legal-legislative experts.
The proceedings will be opened by the President of the National Research Council Maria Chiara Carrozza. The discussion will be moderated by Massimo Clemente, Scientific Director of RETE and Director of the CNR IRISS, and by Barbara Bonciani, Councillor for the Port and Port-City Integration of the Municipality of Livorno, member of the Government Council and of the Scientific Committee of RETE. Speakers will include Rinio Bruttomesso, past President of RETE, and Mario Sommariva, President of the Port Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea, which recently joined the Association as an ordinary member.
