With over 100 kilometres of coastline, Naples and its metropolitan area represent an invaluable resource for Italy, but also a complex challenge to be faced. An illuminating comparison comes from the experience of New York, a city that has transformed a degraded stretch of the Hudson River into one of the most innovative, sustainable and resilient waterfronts in the world.

On Wednesday 29 January 2025, at 4.30 pm, the event ‘The New York Waterfront Experience for the Naples Waterfront and Metropolitan Coastline’ will take place at the ACEN Conference Room of Palazzo Ruffo della Scaletta. The initiative, organised by the CNR Construction Technologies Institute (CNR ITC) with the support of important local and international partners (RETE, ANIAI Campania, Friends of Molo San Vincenzo, The International Propeller Clubs), will be an opportunity to reflect on the opportunities for development and enhancement of the Neapolitan waterfront through a critical comparison with the Hudson River Park model in New York.

After the institutional greetings of Angelo Lancellotti (President ACEN), Andrea Annunziata (President ADSP) and Salvatore Vitiello (Commander of the Navy Logistic Command), the discussion, introduced and moderated by Massimo Clemente (Director of CNR ITC and of RETE Scientific Committee), will see the interventions of internationally and locally renowned experts such as Tom Fox, author of the book Creating the Hudson River Park: Environmental and Community Activism, Politics, and Greed, dedicated to the transformation of New York’s waterfront, and Alessandro Castagnaro (President of the scientific committee for the UNESCO Management Plan), who will explore the relations between the port and the city in the context of the UNESCO Management Plan.

Among the other contributions, Caterina Arcidiacono (President of Friends of Molo San Vincenzo) will explore the role of the waterfront for the city’s wellbeing, while Umberto Masucci (President Propeller Club Port of Naples) will present the Molo San Vincenzo and Museo del Mare project as challenges for the maritime cluster. The discussion will be enriched by the reflections of architects Guendalina Salimei and Rosario Pavia (Terminal Beverello design group), concluding with remarks by Edoardo Cosenza, Councillor for Infrastructure of the Municipality of Naples.

The event is intended as a moment of dialogue between different competences to explore innovative, sustainable and participatory solutions in the management of urban and maritime heritage, offering a significant contribution to the urban quality and transformation of the Neapolitan metropolitan coastline.
