The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) today inaugurated the new stage of Palma’s seafront promenade with a visit from the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, who toured the new area accompanied by APB president Javier Sanz and other local and regional authorities. The event, which included the opening of the exhibition ‘A Walk Along the Seafront’, marks the completion of a comprehensive transformation that redefines the connection between the port and the city. The redevelopment has created a greener, more accessible, and sustainable space designed for public enjoyment and active mobility.
The project, carried out by the APB, represents an investment of more than €50 million and the transformation of 3.5 kilometers of waterfront. The new promenade prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists, expands green areas, and promotes sustainable mobility while reducing the dominance of motor traffic.
During the visit, APB president Javier Sanz highlighted the participatory process behind the project, “in which we have been particularly sensitive in taking into account the views of business owners, shopkeepers, and local residents.” For his part, Minister Puente remarked that “Palma now has a port area fully integrated into the city, designed for people, leisure, and sustainability.”
Over the three years of construction, more than 2,300 new trees have been planted, 37,000 m² of landscaped areas created, and large spaces set aside for pedestrians, cyclists, and recreation. The redevelopment also includes sustainable drainage systems, smart LED lighting, and electric vehicle charging points.
‘A Walk Along the Seafront’: The Story of a Transformation
The day also featured the opening of the exhibition ‘A Walk Along the Seafront’, which offers a historical journey through the evolution of the promenade from its origins to the present day. The exhibition explains how the route was originally conceived to meet a strategic need: connecting the Old Quay with the newly built Western Breakwater and with the new Paraires and Poniente quays, thus facilitating port connectivity and the growth of Palma’s harbor.
La exposición dedica un espacio destacado a la última gran remodelación, iniciada en 2022 y finalizada este año, que ha transformado profundamente su fisonomía y su función urbana. Este nuevo paseo recupera el protagonismo de las personas, integra el puerto en la vida de la ciudad y convierte la fachada marítima en un espacio de encuentro y convivencia.
‘Un paseo por el Marítimo’ puede visitarse en el Port Centre del puerto de Palma (entrada por camino de la Escollera) de lunes a viernes, en horario de 10:00 a 13:00 y de 16:00 a 19:00 horas, hasta el 23 de diciembre.
Fin de semana solidario y deportivo
La APB celebra esta transformación de la fachada marítima de Palma con la primera Carrera Solidaria de la Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares. Se celebrará los días 15 y 16 de noviembre y los beneficios de las inscripciones se destinarán íntegramente a Projecte Home Balears.
El evento comenzará el sábado con una feria de entidades deportivas y sociales en la plaza de Sant Domingo de la Calzada, junto con actividades gratuitas para todas las edades. El domingo 16, a partir de las 10:00h, se dará la salida a la carrera de los 10 km, que recorrerá pr primera vez zonas portuarias habitualmente cerradas al público. A continuación, tendrán lugar las carreras infantiles, otra carrera de 4 km y la caminata popular de también 4 km.
Las inscripciones están disponibles a través de la web de EliteChip. Los dorsales y la camiseta de la carrera se deben recoger el sábado.
Esta iniciativa busca promover la actividad física, la solidaridad y la sostenibilidad, contando con estaciones de agua potable para reducir el uso de plásticos. Con voluntad de continuidad, el evento forma parte de la estrategia de la APB para acercar el puerto a la ciudadanía, promoviendo una mayor integración puerto-ciudad y potenciando la convivencia entre la activadad portuaria-marítima y el uso ciudadano.
